Welcome to Cumberland Academy Middle School!
My name is John Grote and I teach Theatre Arts and Public Speaking here at CAMS. This is my third year teaching at Cumberland and my sixth year teaching overall. I previously taught Theatre, Technical Theatre, Speech, and Debate at Longview High School as well as working at Tyler Junior College as the Theater Manager. I have been involved in theatre all of my life and have a Bachelor of Arts from West Texas A&M University and a Master of Arts in Theatre Studies from Baylor University.
I have been married for nine years to my lovely wife and we have an eight-year-old daughter who will be attending Cumberland Elementary this year in third grade. We enjoy spending time together and playing games, reading books, and shopping. We had a new addition to the family last summer. A Bichon Frise puppy named Princess. I enjoy being outdoors whether it is hunting, hiking, or enjoying the sounds of nature.
I believe that all students can gain a vast number of life skills from theatre and public speaking. In each, students learn to be more confident in themselves and their work. Participation and group work are key experiences in both theatre and public speaking that are completed through communal endeavors. While theatre is fun by nature, there is also an order to the 'chaos' which students will learn. The goal for each student in theatre and public speaking should be to gain confidence in themselves and in front of others while enjoying the process.
I look forward to a great year in Theatre and Public Speaking and invite you to have fun while learning!
